The recent form makes for interesting reading. Over the last six races, El Fox has finished 3rd, 4th, 4th, 4th, 5th, and 3rd — reading from most recent backwards. There is a horse in there that is competitive enough to avoid finishing last, consistently close enough to place money but never quite finding that extra gear when it matters. Seven of its ten races have come at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter level of British racing — the kind of races designed to give horses like this a winnable opportunity. It has not taken any of them.
The trainer is Marco Botti, who operates out of Newmarket in Suffolk — one of the most famous training centres in the world. Botti's yard has sent out 45 winners already this season, so this is not a struggling operation. The horses around El Fox are winning. Whether El Fox eventually joins them is the question every race now carries.
