What lends real weight to this debut is the yard responsible for it. Roger Varian trains out of Newmarket, one of the historic homes of British horseracing, and his operation has already sent out 87 winners this season alone. That is not a yard that sends horses to the track without believing they are ready. When a trainer of that calibre puts a first-time runner on the track, it is worth paying attention.
Beyond that, there is little to go on — and that honesty is part of what makes a debut interesting. Effetto is an unknown quantity, which in racing terms means anything is possible. Some horses win first time out and never look back. Others need the experience before they find their stride. We will simply have to watch and see what kind of horse Effetto turns out to be.
