What is worth noting, though, is who is doing the training. Roger Varian's yard in Newmarket has sent out 87 winners already this season, which puts it firmly among the busiest and most successful operations in British racing. A trainer running at that volume and that level does not fill a stable with horses she does not believe in, so the fact that Effetto has a run under its belt from a yard in such sharp form is at least a promising starting point.

There is nothing more to read into yet — one race tells you almost nothing, and a fifth-place finish could mean the horse was never travelling, or could mean it ran a perfectly respectable first race against stronger opposition than it will face next time. Right now, Effetto is simply a horse to watch.
