The recent form makes for difficult reading. Working backwards from the most recent race, the sequence reads 11th, pulled up or unseated, 6th, 3rd, 5th, and 4th — a horse that briefly looked to be finding its feet with that third-place finish but has since drifted back into the pack, and last time out finished last of the finishers. That run came just yesterday, so Earl Neigh is very much an active horse, still being asked the question.
What gives the situation some interest is the yard sending it out. Trainer Andrew Slattery, based in Thurles in County Tipperary, has sent out 60 winners already this season — that is a yard operating with real confidence and momentum. When a trainer of that output keeps running a horse that has yet to win, it usually means they believe there is a performance in there somewhere. Whether Earl Neigh can finally deliver it remains the open question.
