Eagle Bay

The most telling part of Eagle Bay's story is what happened after two early successes. It won at Thirsk on 5 June, then again at Chester on 27 June, which should have marked the beginning of a useful run. Instead, the horse has won just twice more in its last six races, with only scattered top-3 finishes to show for recent efforts. The recent form reads 2-7-5-7-1-1 — two winners sandwiched between some poor days, including a pair of seventh-place finishes. That pattern suggests a horse that finds form in patches but hasn't yet worked out how to string wins together or handle the demands of racing regularly at a higher level.

Trainer Harriet Bethell's Arnold yard, based in East Yorkshire, has had a solid season with 18 winners to its name, so Eagle Bay is operating within a capable setup. But four months without a win — the last one came at Chester at the end of June — is a long drought for a horse this age, and it may indicate the yard is still trying to find the right race or conditions to unlock another win. Eagle Bay raced just a day ago, so it remains actively campaigned, but the wait since that summer victory at Chester is the clearest sign that life has become harder since those early career successes.
