Dutch Gold

Both career wins have come at prominent Irish venues — Down Royal in June 2023, then The Curragh that October. The Curragh win in particular matters: it is the home of Irish Flat racing, the place where the best horses compete, and landing a race there is not something that happens by accident. The fact that Dutch Gold last won there 32 months ago — nearly three seasons — makes the wait for another victory a long one, but it also anchors this horse firmly at a decent level of the sport.

The more pressing concern is recent form. Six runs without a win, and the finishing positions — eighth, tenth, twenty-fourth, tenth, tenth, and unplaced most recently — paint a picture of a horse that has been struggling to land a blow. That twenty-fourth is a bad day at the office by any measure. Jockey Colin Keane, one of the most respected riders in Irish racing, has partnered Dutch Gold nine times for a single win together, winning around 1 in every 9 of those rides. That is below what you would normally expect from a partnership that has been given this many chances.

Trainer Noel Meade runs one of the most established yards in Ireland, based in Co Meath, and has already sent out 42 winners this season — a yard very much in form. Dutch Gold is six years old and currently active, having raced just a day ago, so there is no suggestion of anything wrong physically. The horse is simply in a lean run, and with the right distance, a decent surface, and a bit of luck in running, those two Curragh and Down Royal wins are a reminder that there is a performance somewhere in Dutch Gold waiting to resurface.
