That recent Brighton victory is the real story. After a patchy run of late — a top-3 finish two starts back, then fourth and fifth place finishes — the horse bounced back to win, proving it is still genuinely competitive. The form either side of a win can be deceptive in racing, and a horse that can recover like this has the temperament to try again.
The key to Dreambird Dolly seems to be ground conditions. On normal ground, the horse has won 2 of 7 races, a win rate of nearly 30 per cent. Switch to different conditions and the record drops away entirely. Trainer John Gallagher, based at Chastleton in Oxfordshire, will know this well. The yard has had eight winners this season and clearly understands this horse's preferences.
One oddity: William Carson, the horse's regular rider, has partnered Dreambird Dolly for seven races without a win. Whether that is bad luck, a lack of chemistry, or simply that the horse performs better for other jockeys is impossible to say from the numbers alone. What is clear is that after last week's Brighton success, Dreambird Dolly is back in the mix.
