The headline number with Doyen Quest is what happens when the ground is normal: 5 wins from just 6 races on a standard surface, a remarkable 83% record. He has also built a genuine affection for Cheltenham — two wins from six races there, including back-to-back Class 2 victories in April and November 2024. Winning twice at a track as competitive and unforgiving as Cheltenham is not something most horses manage once, let alone twice. Class 2 races are among the better quality races in Britain, so these are serious performances against serious rivals.

His most recent win came at Exeter in November 2025, and it tells you a lot about the horse. Dan Skelton was open afterwards that on the weight the horse was asked to carry, they probably shouldn't have won — Doyen Quest had a penalty and was conceding weight to every other runner. What swung it was an aggressive, front-footed ride from Harry Skelton and the horse jumping brilliantly throughout. Even then, Skelton senior admitted they "nicked it a little", which is the honest assessment of a good trainer who knows his horse left something in the tank.

That phrase — leaving something in the tank — seems to follow Doyen Quest around. Harry Skelton himself noted after the Cheltenham win that "you wouldn't know how good Doyen Quest is, as he keeps a bit back for himself." That is both a compliment and a provocation. His recent form reads 4-2-2-1-2-4, active just a day ago, and with entries potentially including the Coral Gold Cup — one of the most prestigious handicap chases in the calendar — the question of exactly how good this horse is may soon get a very public answer.
