Doyen Magic

Trained by P J Rothwell's yard in Tinahely, Co Wicklow, Doyen Magic has been a regular fixture on the track and showed up just yesterday for another attempt. The yard itself has had a solid season with 35 winners to its name, so there is clearly experience and horsepower in the team. Most often, the horse has been ridden by Tiernan Power Roche, who has won once aboard it from six rides together—a win rate of roughly 1 in 6 races. That partnership produced the Limerick win, at least, which speaks to some understanding between jockey and horse. With recent form showing two runner-up finishes in its last six races, Doyen Magic remains a horse that occasionally finds its level but is more of a journeyman than a star. It belongs in races where the pace suits and the opposition is modest, and on its day—as Kilbeggan and Limerick proved—it can get the job done.
