The real clue to Down To Business's potential is its behaviour over longer distances. When asked to race 2 miles or further, it has won 1 of 4 races — a quarter of the time. That's markedly better than its overall record, and it suggests the horse is only running properly when given room to settle into its stride. Its breakthrough came at Worcester on 23 August, and it won again at the same track six weeks later in late October, which tells you something about its suitability for that particular course. Worcester clearly suits it, either because of the track itself or because Skelton's team has worked out what this horse needs to thrive there.

Recent form shows a horse that is genuinely trying. In its last six races it has finished out of the frame only once, with placings of fourth, thirteenth, first, fifth, fourth and third — so it has won one of those six runs and placed in four of them. It raced just yesterday, which means the yard is keeping it active and engaged. A 4-year-old in Dan Skelton's stable, where nearly 200 winners have been saddled this season alone, is hardly being neglected. Down To Business may not be destined for the very top, but it has shown enough to suggest there are more wins to come — particularly if it races over the longer distances and trips that seem to bring out the best in it.
