What makes that second place more interesting is the context around it. Her last four races read 10th, 2nd, 6th, and 7th — which is the kind of form that suggests she found one race where everything clicked, sandwiched between efforts where it clearly didn't. The 10th-place finish in her most recent outing, just a day ago, is the number that will concern her trainer most. Coming off a placed run and then finishing well back is a step in the wrong direction, and it raises genuine questions about whether that good day was the exception rather than a sign of things to come.
She is trained by C W J Farrell, based in Bunclody in County Wexford, and the yard has sent out six winners already this season — so there is form in the stable. Farrell clearly knows how to get horses to win races. The question is whether Donna Time can tap into whatever that is. At three years old she still has time to develop and find her feet, and plenty of horses take a while to figure things out at that age.
For now, Donna Time is a horse with more questions than answers — still winless, still inconsistent, but young enough that writing her off entirely would be premature. The next few races will tell a much clearer story.
