Doing It In Style

The recent form makes for tough reading. Looking at the last six runs, two of those were non-completions, and in the other four the horse finished 7th, 8th, 9th, and 9th. Those are mid-to-back-of-the-field finishes, and it is hard to find much encouragement in the numbers. The one bright spot is that Doing It In Style raced just yesterday, so whoever is running this horse has not given up on it — and that counts for something.

The trainer is Gavin Cromwell, one of the sharper operators in Irish racing, based out of Navan in County Meath. Cromwell's yard has sent out 97 winners already this season, which tells you this is not a small or struggling operation — it is a yard that knows how to get horses to perform. The fact that a trainer of that calibre still has Doing It In Style in active work is perhaps the most interesting thing about this horse right now. Cromwell is not in the habit of wasting time on horses that have nothing to offer, so the question worth asking is whether he sees something in this one that the race record has not yet shown. Whether the horse can finally reward that patience is another matter entirely.
