The career record reads three wins and eight places from 18 races, which works out at roughly 1 win in every 6 runs, or 17%. That is a modest ratio on paper, but the quality of those wins tells a different story. His first came at Kempton Park in November 2021, his second at Ascot in November 2023 in one of the top two tiers of British racing. Then, in March 2025, he won the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival — one of the biggest occasions in jump racing — in front of a packed crowd. Not every horse gets to win once at Cheltenham. The fact that he did it on the grandest stage of all says a great deal about what he is capable of on his best day.

Jockey Brian Hughes, who rode him that day, was refreshingly candid afterwards: he missed a jump two from home and found himself closing sooner than he wanted — but the horse simply kept giving. That is the quality that makes Doddiethegreat compelling. He ran a similarly fine race at Punchestown shortly after, which prompted Henderson to suggest he deserved a crack at the top Graded races. Whether he quite belongs at that level is an open question — Henderson himself is cautious — but the ambition is there.

On normal ground he wins 2 from 6, roughly 1 in every 3 races, which is his sweet spot. Regular partner Nico de Boinville has ridden him in eight of his 18 races and won twice together, a win rate of 25%, or 1 in every 4. He has not won in his last six outings, and it has been 13 months since that Cheltenham high, but with a yard that has sent out 85 winners this season and a mission that matters beyond racing, Doddiethegreat still has a story left to tell.
