What we do know is the breeding. Divinator is by Doctor Dino, a French-bred stallion who won the prestigious Turf at the Breeders' Cup in 2007, one of the most important races in the world. His offspring tend to come into their own with a bit of time and distance, which may explain why this horse has been given an extra year before being asked to race. The mother's side brings in Martaline, a stallion whose descendants consistently perform well in staying and jumping races. On paper, this looks like a horse built for the long game.
The trainer is S R B Crawford, operating out of Larne in County Antrim. It is a yard that has been in good form this season — 12 winners already — which suggests Divinator has been prepared by a team that knows what it is doing. When a yard in that kind of form sends out a first-time runner, it is at least worth paying attention.
Beyond that, the slate is blank. Divinator is an unknown quantity, and that is actually part of the interest. Every now and then a horse walks onto a track for the first time and looks like it has been doing it for years. Whether Divinator is one of those, only the race will tell.
