The most telling sign of Diligent Resdev's potential is what happens on normal ground at shorter distances. When the track is in standard condition and the race is between 5 and 6½ furlongs, the horse has won 2 of its 5 races — a 40% win rate that stands out sharply against its overall record. That's the terrain where it genuinely thrives. Its three career wins include a Class 2 race at Ayr back in September 2024, a significant achievement at the top level, but that was nearly two years ago. Since then, nothing. The horse has run six times without winning, finishing no higher than sixth place in any of them, which explains why recent form reads like a catalogue of disappointment: 6-11-6-9-6-9.

Michael and David Easterby's yard at Sheriff Hutton has been in good form this season with 55 winners, so the training setup is solid. Joanna Mason has ridden Diligent Resdev eight times for just the one win, suggesting the partnership hasn't quite clicked. What's clear is that when conditions align — fast, dry ground, a shorter race, perhaps back at a track where it has won before — Diligent Resdev can turn up and perform at a decent level. Right now, though, it needs those pieces to fall into place. The long absence from the winner's enclosure is starting to weigh on what could otherwise be a useful middle-distance performer.
