That is a significant step up in company, and the fact that it delivered on that occasion tells you this is not just a horse that beats average fields. It first got its nose in front at Newcastle back in November 2023, and between those two wins it had built enough of a profile to be trusted in a race of that quality.

The numbers reveal some interesting patterns. On normal ground, Diligent Resdev has won 2 from 4 races — a 50% win rate, which is extraordinary. Similarly, over sprint distances of five to six-and-a-half furlongs, it has also won 2 from 4. Those two conditions overlap significantly, and when they line up together, this horse becomes a very different proposition. By contrast, it has only won 1 from 6 races at its most common level of Class 3 — roughly 1 in 6 — which suggests it is at its best when the race asks a sharp, specific question rather than a routine one.

The caveat is form. Diligent Resdev has not won in its last six races, its most recent finishes reading 9th, 6th, 9th, 6th, 3rd, 3rd — a slide from near-misses into mid-field anonymity. It raced just yesterday, which shows the team are keeping it active, but regular partner Joanna Mason has only won once in eight rides together, a rate of roughly 1 in 8. That combination of a cold streak and a modest partnership stat means patience is required. The Ayr win in September 2024 is now 21 months in the past — long enough to feel like a different chapter. Whether Diligent Resdev can write a new one is the question worth watching.
