Those wins have not come against soft opposition either. Three of Diamond Rain's four victories have come in top-tier races — the kind that only the best horses in Britain are entered for — and the fourth was one step below that. A first win at Ascot in May 2024 was followed almost immediately by another at Newbury, and then came two more the following year at Haydock and Newcastle. Four top-level wins before the age of five puts Diamond Rain in very select company, and the prize money earned reflects that.
The partnership with jockey William Buick has been central to all of it. Buick has been in the saddle for all six of Diamond Rain's races, winning four of them — that same two-in-three ratio — which suggests a genuine understanding between horse and rider. Buick is one of the most accomplished jockeys in the country, and the fact that he has kept the ride throughout speaks to how seriously the yard takes this horse.
That yard is Charlie Appleby's operation in Newmarket, one of the most powerful stables in British racing. Appleby's team has sent out 122 winners already this season — a number that would be a career highlight for most trainers, and for Appleby is simply Tuesday. When a yard of that firepower keeps a horse in its top races, it means something.
The one question hanging over Diamond Rain right now is straightforward: it has not raced for nine months. Whatever the reason for that break, a horse returning after that kind of absence always carries an element of the unknown. The talent is clearly there. The record speaks loudly. The only thing left to find out is whether Diamond Rain picks up exactly where it left off.
