His best distance is somewhere between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs — a middle-distance trip that asks for stamina as well as pace. At that range, he has won 2 of his 11 races, a win rate of 18%, which is meaningfully better than his overall record. In other words, get him over the right distance and he becomes a different proposition — roughly 1 in every 5 or 6 attempts rather than 1 in 12. That kind of split tells you a yard that knows what it is doing will target him carefully.

The problem is timing. His last win came at Pontefract in June 2023 — nearly three years ago now — and his last six runs have read 6-14-2-9-9-9, a sequence that ends with three last-place finishes. That second place somewhere in the middle suggests the spark is still there occasionally, but recent races have been rough. Whether that is a matter of finding the right race, the right ground conditions, or simply that the horse is past his best is a question only the next few runs will answer.

He is trained by Kevin Thomas Coleman out of Carrick-on-Suir in County Tipperary, a yard that has sent out 11 winners already this season — so this is not a small operation lacking in confidence or ability. Coleman knows how to get horses to win. The question is whether Derry Lad can give him another opportunity to do so. At eight years old, the window is not getting wider, but horses at this level can surprise you, especially when conditions and trip align. His first win came at Sligo back in May 2022, and somewhere in there is a horse capable of winning again — it is just a matter of finding the right day.
