The recent record does offer a faint glimmer. Those fourth-place finishes suggest the horse is in and around the action at times, rather than simply making up the numbers at the back of the field. A seventh and a twelfth are in there too, though, which tells you the performances have been inconsistent at best. Racing just one day ago, Deep Sleep is clearly an active and busy horse right now — the question is whether that activity is going to translate into a result.
What Deep Sleep does have in its favour is the quality of the stable behind it. Tim Easterby's yard at Great Habton in North Yorkshire has sent out 128 winners already this season — that is a formidable operation, the kind that knows how to place a horse to its best advantage and find the right opportunity. When a trainer of that calibre keeps running a horse, it usually means they believe there is a win in it somewhere. The patience hasn't paid off yet, but you wouldn't entirely write Deep Sleep off while it still has that team working on its behalf.
