What makes Darnation truly exceptional, however, is its extraordinary record on wet ground. It has won all three of its races on muddy or waterlogged surfaces — a perfect three from three. That is not luck; that is a defining quality, the kind of edge that can make a horse invaluable on the right day and wrong course on another. At Class 1 level, it has won two of five races, a respectable 40 per cent win rate against the best competition. The other side of the ledger matters too: it has five places from eight outings, meaning it has finished in the frame in every race it did not win. There is consistency here, alongside genuine ability.
The trainer K. R. Burke, based at Coverham in North Yorkshire, runs a yard that has produced 145 winners this season alone, so Darnation sits within a operation of real substance and know-how. Why the horse has not raced since September 2023 — 37 months ago — remains unanswered by the facts available. But the recent form line reads 11-6-2-14-1-1, and those last two races, both victories, came close together and suggest a horse in form. Given what Darnation can do on the right ground, and given the quality of those Class 1 wins, there is every reason to hope we have not seen the last of this capable performer.
