That is a remarkable conversion rate and tells you that when the track is in its standard state, Dark Thirty is a genuine threat. He is at his best over the short, sharp distances of 5 to 6½ furlongs, winning 5 of 17 races at those trips, and his trainer John and Sean Quinn, based in Norton, North Yorkshire, have clearly found the formula. Their yard has sent out 44 winners this season alone, and Dark Thirty fits neatly into their programme of targeting the right race at the right moment.

York is where he has really made his mark. Two wins from just five visits to the track is the kind of record that makes racegoers take notice — it speaks to a horse who finds his best when it matters at a particular venue. He won there as recently as three weeks ago, and Sean Quinn was candid afterwards: they bought him knowing his form at tracks like York and Newmarket was rock solid, and the job was never about transforming the horse, just about getting him right in himself. That patience has paid off.

Jockey Sean Levey has been his most regular partner, winning 5 of their 23 races together — roughly 1 in every 4½ rides. After Dark Thirty's Class 2 win at Newmarket in April 2024, Levey hinted at what was to come, describing him as a potential "fun Saturday horse" — which is exactly what he has become. His recent form shows a win and a runner-up from his last six outings, with the trainer noting he goes especially well fresh. Dark Thirty raced just yesterday, so the yard will now be plotting the next target for a horse who, on his day and on his ground, is very hard to beat.
