The horse has a particular relationship with York that borders on the obsessive. Two wins from 19 races there might not sound like dominance, but York is one of the most prestigious tracks in Britain, attracts strong fields, and is notoriously difficult to win at repeatedly. The fact that he keeps coming back and performing there tells you this is a horse built for a proper stage — and he underlined that just this week, winning at York as recently as 10 July 2026. That is not a horse winding down; that is a horse in the form of his life. His recent sequence backs that up: a win, then a 12th, a 5th, a 4th, and a 2nd in the run before — the kind of inconsistency that frustrates, punctuated by moments that remind everyone what he is capable of.

Kevin Ryan, who trains him out of Hambleton in North Yorkshire, has always believed the talent is there. During a stable visit back in 2023, Ryan pointed to high-class form the horse had shown as a three-year-old and said the team retained a lot of faith in him. His jockey at one point described him simply as "a talented horse when he's on a good day" — and the phrase "when he's on a good day" tells you everything about what it is like to follow this horse. Ryan himself once called him a work in progress, a big laid-back character at home who has had to learn on the job. That seems to have taken time, but the learning appears to have stuck.

Ryan's yard has been in excellent nick this season, sending out 45 winners, so Dark Moon Rising is operating in a confident, well-organised setup. He has shown a particular liking for the top end of competition, with two wins from 21 races at Class 2 level — some of the best races outside the very elite. At a mile and a quarter his record reads 1 win from just 3 races, suggesting there may still be more to find at that trip. For a horse who raced yesterday and won at York this week, the conversation is not about the past. It is very much about what comes next.
