Danger Alert

The bare facts are these: his last win came at Chester on 10 May 2023, nearly three and a half years ago. Since then, he has raced 24 times without victory, though he has picked up 10 places in that stretch—decent enough finishes that only sharpen the sense of underachievement. His most recent six races tell the story: he was sixth last time out, then ninth, fourth, seventh, fourth again, and third. He was last on track just a day ago. At one point he was rated in the 90s, a respectable level, but he has drifted downwards into Class 4 races, where he wins only 1 in 14 attempts. Even at that modest level, he cannot find the consistency to get his head in front.

Part of the problem appears to be bad luck and his own temperament. Kirby mentions an unlucky run at Sandown two outings back where interference may have cost him. George Boughey, a fellow trainer who watched him win at Chester, put a finger on something else: Danger Alert "puts his head up a little." That is racing-speak for a horse who does not quite stay focused when the pressure comes on. He needs to be ridden late, needs someone who knows him, and even then the margins are thin. His partnership with Pat Cosgrave, who has ridden him seven times, has yielded no wins at all.

What keeps Danger Alert in training is the simple belief that there is something there to find. His owners, Tim and his wife—Tim being a former England rugby player with the means and patience to keep running him—show real faith. Kirby clearly backs them, and as a trainer with wins on the board this season, he is not somebody wasting time on a lost cause. Danger Alert is the horse everyone at the yard believes will click one day. He just hasn't yet.
