At six years old, this horse has had plenty of chances to break its duck, and so far it has declined every single one of them. Across 26 races, Daley T has never won, though it has managed five placed finishes — meaning it has finished in the top positions without ever quite getting its nose in front. That is a frustrating record for anyone following it, and a puzzle that trainer Tony Carroll, based at Cropthorne in Worcestershire, has yet to solve.

Carroll's yard is clearly no backwater operation — 136 winners sent out this season tells you this is a trainer who knows how to get horses to win races. That makes Daley T something of an outlier in the stable. The horse typically runs in Class 6, which is the lowest tier of British racing, essentially the entry-level category where horses go when they need to find easier opportunities. Daley T has run 15 times at that level and is still waiting for a breakthrough. When a horse cannot win at the most accessible level of the sport, it raises honest questions about whether a winning day is coming at all.

Regular jockey William Carson has ridden Daley T in six of those races and has drawn a blank every time. Their most recent form together makes for uncomfortable reading: finishing fourth, seventh, third, eighth, fifth, and sixth in the last six runs. The third-place finish is the closest thing to encouragement in that sequence, but the seventh and eighth-place efforts suggest inconsistency rather than slow-burning progress. Daley T raced just one day ago, so it is very much an active participant in the sport — just not a winning one.

There is something almost admirable about a horse that keeps turning up. Five place finishes from 26 races means Daley T is not completely out of its depth — it is competitive enough to occasionally threaten, just not quite good enough to finish the job. Whether that changes remains the central question for Carroll and his team. For now, Daley T is the kind of horse that keeps its supporters permanently on the edge of hope.
