Michael Dods trains him out of Piercebridge in County Durham — a yard that has sent out 43 winners this season alone — and the relationship between trainer and horse clearly runs deep. Only Dods's daughter Sophie rides Dakota Gold at home. He does his work alone, still keen, still enthusiastic, still bowling along as if he has something to prove. The career numbers — 4 wins and 12 places from 36 races, winning roughly 1 in every 9 — don't tell the whole story. Dakota Gold has spent most of his career competing at Class 2 level, which means he has consistently lined up against some of the better horses in Britain. His two biggest wins came at York and Doncaster in 2022, both Class 2 races at prestigious tracks. York in particular is one of the sport's great stages, and winning there for the first time at what was already a seasoned age made it all the more striking. After Doncaster, Dods noted that Dakota Gold "got headed and fought back" — not the behaviour of a horse going through the motions, but one who still wants to win.
His last victory came at Ripon in April 2025, off a rating of 86, and Dods has been candid about how the rating system works in his favour now. When a horse gets older and its official mark drops, it starts meeting slightly weaker competition — and that is exactly what happened here. Dods spotted it coming: "I always felt he would become competitive again when he dropped below 90." That kind of patient, long-game thinking from a trainer is what keeps a 12-year-old competitive at this level.
The last six runs have produced nothing better than a fifth place, and the very quick, dry ground is something Dods is careful to avoid. But given that this horse raced just yesterday, is still enthusiastically working at home, and has a trainer who clearly knows exactly what he needs, it would be unwise to write him off entirely. Some horses just love their job. Dakota Gold appears to be one of them.
