The recent form does at least hint at some improvement worth holding onto. Reading the last six results from most recent back — third, fourth, fifth, seventh, sixth, ninth — there's actually a story of progress buried in there. The horse has been creeping forward through the field after a difficult patch, and a third-place finish is the closest it has come to a breakthrough. Whether that momentum translates into a win is the question everyone around it will be asking.
Dabbling runs at Class 5 level, which is the entry point of British racing — the races designed for horses who haven't yet shown enough to be competing for serious prize money. Even at that level, it hasn't been able to win, going zero from three attempts there. That's not unusual for a young horse still learning its trade, but it does mean pressure is building to show something more decisive. Trainer Ollie Pears, based at Norton in North Yorkshire, has sent out nine winners already this season, so the ability to get horses winning is clearly there at the yard. Dabbling just hasn't been one of them yet.
Having raced as recently as yesterday, this is very much a horse in the thick of its campaign. At three years old, there is still time to figure things out — some horses genuinely do improve with experience and find their feet later in a season. For now though, Dabbling remains one of those horses that keeps showing up without quite delivering, and a first win would be a significant moment for everyone waiting on it.
