The recent form makes for difficult reading. The last six results, with the most recent first, read 9-–-–-13-12-9, meaning Cry Before Dawn has been finishing well down the field, including two runs where it either didn't finish or the result wasn't recorded in the usual way. A finish of 13th suggests a large field and a horse that struggled to make any impression. There are no signs yet of a horse finding its feet or closing in on a breakthrough.
Regular jockey Simon Torrens has partnered this horse in five of those six races and is yet to trouble the winner's enclosure together. That is not necessarily a reflection on either horse or rider — sometimes a partnership just hasn't clicked, or the right opportunity hasn't come along — but five races without even placing is a significant hurdle to clear.
Cry Before Dawn is trained by Patrick T Foley, who operates out of Bagenalstown in County Carlow. Foley's yard has sent out 14 winners this season, which shows the operation is clearly capable of producing results — making Cry Before Dawn something of an outlier rather than a reflection of the stable's overall form. The horse raced as recently as 25 days ago, so the yard are clearly persevering and looking for the race that finally suits.
At six years old, time is not infinitely on this horse's side, but horses do sometimes find a particular race or set of conditions that unlocks something. For now, though, Cry Before Dawn is very much a horse still waiting for its moment.
