Crescent Moon

The last six races paint a picture of a horse that is still trying but increasingly running out of luck. Two fifth-place finishes sit alongside a couple of unplaced runs, suggesting Crescent Moon is competitive enough to get into the frame occasionally but not quite good enough to break through when it matters. The horse raced just a day ago, so there is still fire in the tank and the team is still finding opportunities. Keith Donoghue, who rides Crescent Moon most often, has had a 14 percent win rate aboard — one win from seven races — which is slightly better than the horse's overall form but hardly a ringing endorsement of an imminent return to the winners' enclosure.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell's Navan yard has been prolific this season with 96 winners, which means the operation knows how to get horses to the line. That context makes Crescent Moon's lengthy absence from the winner's circle all the more telling. This is a horse that has never quite found its level, hovering somewhere in the middle band of ability — good enough to race regularly, not quite sharp enough to win. At this stage of its career, every race without a second win adds to the sense that whatever promise Crescent Moon showed back in April 2025 may have been the best it was ever going to offer.
