Copper Beach

That one win came at Uttoxeter back in June 2023, and it remains the sole career victory to date — now over 37 months ago. Since then, Copper Beach has run six more times without finding the winner's enclosure, though its recent form does show a run of three consecutive second-place finishes before its last run, in which it faded to ninth. A horse that keeps finishing second is, depending on your perspective, either frustratingly close or reassuringly competitive. For Copper Beach, those placed efforts suggest it belongs at this level without quite being able to dominate it.

The majority of its career has been spent in Class 4 races — the bread-and-butter level of the sport, a step below the top tier but competitive enough to test a horse properly. At that level, Copper Beach has won 1 from 13 races, or roughly 1 in every 13 attempts. That is a thin return, though the ten places alongside it suggest the horse rarely runs a completely lost race. Its most regular partner in the saddle has been jockey Nick Scholfield, who has ridden it five times without a win between them. That partnership is yet to click, at least in terms of getting its head in front.

Copper Beach is trained by the partnership of Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith, a yard operating out of High Eldwick in West Yorkshire that has sent out 42 winners already this season — a genuinely productive operation. That the yard is firing on all cylinders makes Copper Beach's own drought a little more striking by contrast. At nine years old and with just one career win, it is not a horse anyone would back to transform its record overnight. But it raced just yesterday and is clearly still fit and in training, which says something in itself — some horses earn their keep simply by turning up and running their race.
