What we do know is that he's bred for jumping. His sire, Zambezi Sun, is a stallion associated with staying horses who tend to improve as the races get longer and tougher, while his dam's side carries the influence of Malinas, a sire whose offspring are well regarded in the National Hunt world. Whether that breeding translates into ability on the track is something only racing will reveal.
At five years old, he's arriving later than a typical Flat horse but right on schedule for the jumping game, where horses often take time to fill out and mature before they're asked to do it for real. Matt Sheppard, who trains him from a small yard in Eastnor, Herefordshire, has sent out 7 winners already this season — a healthy return that suggests he knows how to have a horse ready when it matters. Whether Connemara Joe is one of his better prospects, or simply a horse being given his first experience of a racecourse, is the question worth watching.
