The recent run of form is actually more encouraging than the bare numbers suggest. Three consecutive third-place finishes earlier in the sequence show a horse that is consistently competitive and finishing races well — it's just that "well" hasn't been quite well enough. The last two runs produced eighth-place finishes, so the momentum from those placed efforts hasn't continued, and there's clearly work to do to rediscover that consistency. Colugo raced just one day ago, so it is very much an active runner at this point in the season.
Luke McAteer has been the regular partner, riding Colugo in five of its races without yet getting that breakthrough, which means the two of them are still waiting on their first win together. That said, trainer Ian Patrick Donoghue has sent out 26 winners from his yard in Clonalvy, County Meath this season, which shows this is a stable that clearly knows how to win races. The fact that Colugo hasn't joined that tally yet doesn't reflect on the quality of the operation — some horses simply take longer to find their moment, and Donoghue's record suggests that when the right opportunity comes along, the team around this horse is more than capable of finding it.
For now, Colugo remains a horse whose interest lies in the question of whether the win finally arrives — and given how active it has been, that answer shouldn't be too long in coming.
