Colcannon is a six-year-old trained by Noel Meade, whose Castletown operation has been in fine form this season — 42 winners sent out already, making it one of the more productive yards in Ireland right now. When a horse is trained by someone producing winners at that rate, you know it is being prepared with care and placed in races where it has a genuine chance.
What makes Colcannon particularly interesting is how well the horse goes on wet or muddy ground. In three races on soft or heavy ground, Colcannon has won twice — that is a two-from-three record, or 67%, which is remarkably high. To put that in perspective: most horses win roughly one in ten or one in twelve races over the course of a career. Winning two of every three races on a particular surface is the kind of figure that makes a trainer sit up and take notice of the weather forecast.
The first win came at Galway in October 2024, and the most recent was at Fairyhouse just eight weeks ago, in April 2026 — so this is a horse in form right now, not one coasting on past glories. The last six runs read 7-5-1-4-4-6, which shows that winning run sandwiched between some mid-pack finishes. Horses can be placed to target specific conditions or track setups, and given Colcannon's obvious fondness for wet ground, that Fairyhouse win was probably no accident.
Raced just yesterday, Colcannon is very much in active campaigning mode. A horse that wins one in five, places in over half of all races, and turns into something close to a specialist when the ground gets soft is a useful horse to follow — particularly through the wetter months.
