The trainer Charles Hills has been characteristically patient. His yard has sent out 29 winners already this season, so he knows what a horse in form looks like — and he clearly thinks Cogitate's moment is approaching. Hills has spoken openly about wanting fast, dry ground for this horse, believing a stiff mile is the trip that will unlock its best, and has been deliberately selective about where it runs next, with a notable race on the horizon that he has been pointing towards. That kind of deliberate targeting is the sign of a trainer who thinks he has something to work with.

The most recent form is worth unpacking. Cogitate ran yesterday and has not won in the last six races, but the recent sequence — a second and another second among the results — shows it has been close. The last win came at Salisbury in May 2025, and before that the breakthrough came at Newbury in July 2023, where Hills described the horse afterwards as a beautiful individual with size and scope, one who could go on to much better things. At the time, he was thinking about the Acomb Stakes, a race his yard has won before with some well-regarded horses.

The partnership with jockey Billy Loughnane is still relatively new — five races together — but Loughnane has already delivered that one win from five, a rate of 1 in 5, which compares favourably to Cogitate's overall career average. The horse performs best over seven furlongs to a mile, winning 1 of 7 at those trips, and Hills's stated preference for fast ground gives a clear steer on when to pay attention. When the ground dries out and the distance is right, Cogitate is worth watching.
