Both of those wins came in a tight seven-week window back in late 2023, first at Down Royal in November and then at Punchestown on New Year's Eve. It was a brief purple patch, and it remains the last time Clonmeen has seen the winner's enclosure — now 27 months ago and counting. The recent form figures of 4-9-6-8-4 suggest a horse that is competitive enough to avoid finishing last but not quite doing enough to trouble the front-runners when it matters.
Simon Torrens has been the regular partner, riding Clonmeen in 16 of its 26 races. The pair have won twice together, which works out at roughly 1 in every 8 rides — a meaningful improvement on the horse's overall record, and a sign that the combination at least gives Clonmeen its best chance. Torrens clearly knows the horse well at this point.
Trained by William P Murphy, Clonmeen has returned from a short break of 36 days and heads into its next race with the yard having sent out just one winner this season. That modest tally is worth keeping in mind — it suggests this isn't a stable currently firing on all cylinders. Clonmeen has five career places alongside those two wins, so it has shown it can be involved without quite getting its head in front. At 11, the window for adding to that tally is narrowing, but horses of this age can still spring a surprise — particularly on a track that suits.
