The horse needed time to hit his stride. His first career win didn't come until June 2024, after he had already run several races elsewhere, but once he got going he proved willing. That consistency at one track is where his real value lies. Over his last six races, the picture is mixed — a win three runs ago, a couple of top-3 finishes mixed in with some mid-field runs — but at nine years old and still active just a day ago, he remains competitive. Joe Williamson has been his regular pilot, winning seven of their thirty-eight races together at an 18% rate, slightly better than Clean Getaway's overall record.
What Kirby's yard has learned, through trial and error, is that ground conditions matter enormously to this horse. He is definitely better on faster, firmer ground, which is why they gave him a break and are targeting races selectively now. It is a measured, sensible approach with a horse who has already given the team plenty of good days out. In Class 5 races — his bread and butter — Clean Getaway wins roughly one in every six attempts. He may never win a Group race or chase big prizes, but at Sedgefield, in the right conditions, he knows exactly what to do.
