It's clearly a sprinter by nature, but finding the winning thread has proved elusive. Most tellingly, in seven attempts at Class 2 level — which means some of the better races in Britain — it hasn't won a single one. That's not a disgrace; Class 2 is serious company. But it does suggest City House is operating at a level where the competition consistently has the edge.

The most recent six runs make for sobering reading: finishing fourth, eighth, fourth, fifth, second, and fourth. There's a second place in there, which shows the talent hasn't completely dried up, but that Kempton win is now 32 months in the past. For context, that's nearly three years without a victory — a long time in any sport.

City House is trained by Adrian McGuinness, whose yard over in Lusk, County Dublin has sent out 45 winners this season, which shows the operation is in decent health. The horse raced just one day ago, so it is clearly an active campaigner being kept busy. Whether another moment like Kempton 2023 is still in the locker is the question — and the recent form suggests it will take something special to find out.
