What we do know is that Cilician is bred with some interest. The sire Blackbeard was a sharp, precocious two-year-old himself, which at least suggests the bloodline understands the idea of running fast early in life. The dam is an Australian-bred mare, and Australian breeding tends to carry a similar emphasis on speed and early development, so on paper this is a horse that could hit the ground running from the start.
Brian Meehan trains out of Manton in Wiltshire, one of the more established yards in the south of England. With 13 winners on the board already this season, the stable is clearly in decent form — which matters, because horses from busy, confident yards tend to arrive fit and well-prepared. Meehan has been doing this long enough to know when a horse is ready to run, so the fact that Cilician is making its debut is at least a sign the team feels the time is right. Beyond that, the racecourse will tell us everything.
