Churchman

Alastair Ralph, who trains him out of a yard in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, thinks he has a pretty good idea what that something is. The horse travels beautifully through his races — meaning he moves smoothly and looks full of running for much of the contest — but he just hasn't been finding enough when it matters most, in the final stretch when the race is truly on. To fix that, Ralph is fitting cheekpieces, which are blinkers that narrow a horse's field of vision and help some horses focus and knuckle down rather than drift mentally when the pressure comes on. It's a small change, but it signals that the trainer genuinely believes a win is closer than the bare record suggests.

And Ralph isn't just being optimistic. A third place at Warwick recently, combined with all those seconds, paints the picture of a horse that belongs at this level — Class 5, the entry-level tier of British racing — and is absolutely competitive. The difference between Churchman and the horses beating him is marginal. In 15 races at this level he has zero wins, but he has been placed repeatedly, which means he keeps finishing in the top three or four. That's not the profile of a hopeless case; it's the profile of a horse one good day away from breaking through.

His regular jockey Jay Tidball has been on board for 11 of those 22 races without a win, and between them they've built a partnership that knows this horse inside out. Ralph's yard has sent out 25 winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses over the line. Churchman raced just yesterday, which means he's fit, active, and bang in form. Whether the cheekpieces finally unlock something on the next run is the question — but for once, there's a reasonable argument that the answer might be yes.
