Charencey

The most telling number in Charencey's file is the record in Class 5 races, which is the bread-and-butter level where most everyday horses do the majority of their racing. One win from 15 attempts at that level — roughly 1 in every 15 races — suggests a horse that is always competitive enough to be entered but rarely quite good enough to win. It finishes places, collects minor prize money, keeps busy. That is the story of a lot of horses, and there is no shame in it, but it does mean that wins, when they come, feel genuinely hard-earned.

The last one came at Doncaster on 11 July 2024, which is now almost 22 months ago. First wins came on the all-weather track at Newcastle back in November 2023. So Charencey has shown it can get its head in front, just not recently, and not often. The most encouraging partnership in the horse's career has been with jockey Josephine Gordon, who has ridden Charencey six times and won on two of those occasions — that is a win rate of 1 in 3 with her in the saddle, which stands out sharply against the overall record and suggests the two have found something that works.

Behind the scenes, the training operation is clearly in good health. Ian Williams, based at Alvechurch in Worcestershire, has sent out 91 winners already this season — that is a yard firing on all cylinders, which means Charencey is being looked after by people who know how to get horses to the track in winning condition. The horse raced just one day ago and remains active. Whether another win is coming is anyone's guess, but the willingness to keep running suggests the team believes there is still a race out there waiting to be won.
