The recent form is actually more encouraging than the overall numbers suggest. Looking at the last six races, Cezarro has recorded finishes of third, sixth, fourth, fourth, second, and eighth — and that second place, in particular, shows this horse can get competitive when things click. It raced just one day ago, which tells you Ross Burdon and the team at Newmarket still believe there is a race to be won here. Horses do not keep getting entries if their trainer has given up on them.
Burdon's yard has sent out 12 winners already this season, so this is not a struggling operation — these are people who know how to get a horse to the line first. The question is simply whether Cezarro can find the right opportunity to convert one of those near-misses into a victory. Every horse that finishes second has proved it can be competitive; it just needs one day when everything goes its way.
