Cawthorne Cracker

The bulk of Cawthorne Cracker's career has been spent in Class 5 company — the bread-and-butter level of British racing, one step up from the bottom of the ladder. At that level, the horse has won 3 of its 17 races, roughly 1 in every 6, which is a perfectly solid record. The problem is that it opened its account at Exeter in October 2023, then added a further win at Sedgefield in October 2024, and has not troubled the judge since. That last victory came 22 months ago, and the most recent six runs read 6-5-3-5-3-5 — consistently mid-pack, present but not dangerous.

The partnership with jockey Toby Wynne is the most encouraging thread to pull on here. In 13 races together, they have won 3 times — a win rate of 23%, or roughly 1 in every 4 rides. That is nearly double the horse's overall ratio, which tells you something meaningful: Wynne seems to understand this horse, or at the very least the combination clicks in a way that others do not. When Cawthorne Cracker has won, it has won with him aboard.

The yard behind the horse, Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero operating out of Oldcastle in Cheshire, is having a productive season with 43 winners already on the board. That is a busy, functioning operation, and a horse like Cawthorne Cracker — active as recently as yesterday — clearly remains part of their plans. Whether another win is coming is harder to say. Eighteen months is a long time between victories, but the placing record and the Wynne connection mean this is not a horse to dismiss entirely. It keeps turning up, keeps finishing in the mix, and at some point that might just be enough.
