That single win came at Hamilton Park in June 2024, over the short, sharp distances that suit Catalyse best. At 5 to 6½ furlongs, the record improves considerably: 1 win from just 5 races at those trips, a win rate of 20%, or 1 in 5. That's actually a respectable figure, and it suggests the key to getting the best from this horse is keeping things compact rather than stretching it out.

The recent form, however, is hard to put a positive spin on. The last six results read 10-10-13-7-6-11, which means Catalyse has been finishing in the bottom half of the field more often than not. The win at Hamilton is now 26 months in the rearview mirror, and there's been nothing close to a repeat since.

Jockey Oisin Orr has been the regular rider, partnering Catalyse in 6 of its races and winning once together — a 17% win rate, or 1 in 6, which is actually the most productive partnership this horse has had. Trainer Jim Goldie, based at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, is far from a struggling operation: his yard has sent out 88 winners this season, which shows real strength in depth. The fact that Catalyse races most often at Class 4 — solid mid-tier level, not the top races but not the bottom rung either — means the horse is being placed in competitive company where it has rarely been able to land a blow.

Catalyse raced just yesterday, which tells you the team is keeping this horse active and looking for an opening. The Hamilton win remains the one bright chapter, and with Orr in the saddle at the right trip, the combination that produced it at least exists. Whether lightning strikes twice is another question.
