Cannock Park

Both victories arrived in a short window in autumn 2023. The first came at Bangor-on-Dee in October of that year, and then — just six weeks later — Cannock Park stepped up to one of the top races in Britain and won a Class 2 at Cheltenham. Cheltenham is the sport's most celebrated jumping venue, a track that exposes horses mercilessly, and winning there at any level is not something most horses ever manage. That result alone sets Cannock Park apart from the majority of its rivals.

The ground matters enormously with this horse. On wet or muddy ground, it has won 2 of its 5 races — a 40% win rate that is genuinely exceptional. On other surfaces, it has yet to win at all. That is not a coincidence; it is a pattern worth paying close attention to when the weather turns. Trainer Paul Robson, who operates out of South Hazelrigg in Northumberland and has already sent out 7 winners this season, clearly knows his horse and will be waiting for the right conditions. Jockey Craig Nichol has been the regular partner, winning 2 of their 8 races together — that is 1 in every 4, which is a strong record between horse and rider.

The honest part of the story is that Cannock Park has not won in 31 months. Since that Cheltenham success in November 2023, it has run 6 times without getting back to the winner's enclosure, and most of those races have come at a level — Class 3, one step below those top races — where it has drawn a blank in all 6 attempts. Recent form shows a sequence of mid-field finishes, nothing dramatic in either direction. At 8 years old, the clock is not exactly on its side. But horses trained specifically for wet ground by a patient yard, with a jockey who clearly suits them, can spring surprises when the planets align. The question is simply whether the right race on the right ground comes around again.
