Both wins have come at Chester, including a Class 2 victory in June 2025 — one of the top-tier races in Britain. Winning at that level as a young, lightly raced horse is not something to gloss over. Chester is also a notoriously tricky track, a tight, almost oval-shaped circuit that can catch horses out if they are not switched on. The fact that Calico Blue has taken to it so naturally suggests a natural racing intelligence to go with the raw talent.
The horse did miss time after that second win at Chester — a setback kept it off the track — but trainer Roger Varian is relaxed about the lay-off and clear-eyed about what comes next. Varian, based at Newmarket, has sent out 86 winners already this season, which puts his yard among the most productive in the country. When a trainer of that standing says a horse "could be fun this season," it is worth paying attention. The plan is to step Calico Blue back into action at either the Craven meeting or Newbury's Greenham meeting, both in competitive six- or seven-furlong races against other three-year-olds.
What makes this profile genuinely interesting is the combination of quality and quantity: four races, two wins, zero poor runs, and a Class 2 already on the board. Many horses at this age are still finding their feet. Calico Blue already looks like it knows exactly what it is doing.
