Caburn

The wins came in quick succession last summer. Caburn broke through at Salisbury on 26 June 2024, then struck again at the same course a month later before landing another Class 2 at Newbury on 20 July. That was the last time it found the winners' enclosure. Since then, nothing—six races without a win, the most recent run just a day ago, which resulted in ninth place. That's a long silence for a horse that seemed to have figured something out twelve months ago.

The Tate yard is in good form (51 winners this season), and Caburn has a jockey who knows how to ride it. Dylan Hogan partners the horse regularly and has won 3 of 8 races together—a 38% rate that's well above average and suggests real understanding between rider and horse. Ground conditions matter enormously: on fast, dry ground, Caburn has won 2 of 5 races, but on softer surfaces, it has yet to break through. That's a clue worth noting when studying the going.

The form puzzle is why Caburn is interesting right now. A horse that was winning Class 2 races just over a year ago should not have gone silent for this long. Whether it has suffered injury setback, faced tougher opposition, or simply lost form remains unclear. What is clear is that it retains ability at a decent level and will be watched closely by Hogan and Tate to rediscover that touch.
