Budworth Boy

What works in his favour is timing. He raced just yesterday, so he's clearly fit and active, and trainers don't keep running horses that aren't showing something at home. He's trained by Ewan Whillans, whose yard in Hawick in the Scottish Borders has been in sharp form this season — 28 winners is a serious tally and suggests a team that knows how to get a horse ready to perform. When a horse comes out of a yard firing like that, it's worth paying attention.

Two races is a very small sample. Some horses take three or four outings just to figure out what racing is actually about, and a third and a fourth from the first two attempts is far from a disaster. The next run will tell us a lot more about what Budworth Boy is genuinely capable of.
