The breakthrough came at Southwell in February 2025, and it was not accidental. Portman has spoken openly about how Brinton looked like she might never quite deliver — a frustrating horse to place. The solution turned out to be finding the right distance and fitting her with cheekpieces, a piece of equipment that sits around a horse's eyes to sharpen their focus. It is the kind of small adjustment that sounds simple but can take months of trial and error to land on, and it changed everything. Her most recent win came at Bath in late April 2026, seven weeks ago, so she is fit and currently active.

Almost all of Brinton's racing has been at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, where she has won 3 of her 23 races at that level. That 13% win rate — again, about 1 in every 7 or 8 — is exactly what you would expect from a horse who competes reliably without dominating. Her regular partner in the saddle is Rob Hornby, and together they have won 2 of their 12 races, a slightly better rate of roughly 1 in 6. Her recent form reads 7-11-1-2 going back, meaning she won and then ran second shortly after — a patch of form that suggested she was coming into her own. The latest two runs have been less encouraging, but she raced just yesterday, so the season is clearly not over.

Portman has suggested that Brinton has probably found her level now, and the plan is to give her a short break before returning over winter on the all-weather tracks. That is a sensible note of realism from a trainer whose yard has sent out 46 winners this season. Brinton is not a horse chasing glory at the top end of the sport. She is a hard-working, honest competitor who needed the right setup to show what she could do — and now that the team has found it, she is making the most of it.
