Bright N Shine

Those two wins tell a story of their own. The first came at Dundalk in November 2023, and the second — and most recent — arrived at Down Royal in September 2024, now 21 months ago. Since then, six races and nothing. The recent form reads 13-2-9-18 coming back in to a second place, which is a mixed picture — that second place shows the ability is still there, but so does the 18, which is as bad a run as this horse has had. At six years old, Bright N Shine is not young, and the clock is always ticking on horses at this level.

Where things genuinely get interesting is over a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs. At that distance, Bright N Shine has won 2 of its 7 races — nearly 1 in 3. That is a dramatically better record than anywhere else, and it suggests the horse has a real preference. Get the trip right and you're looking at a very different animal.

Jockey Adam Caffrey has taken the ride seven times and won once together — a 14% win rate, or roughly 1 in 7, which is actually well above the horse's overall average. That's a meaningful partnership, and the fact they keep working together suggests trainer Terence O'Brien, based in Carrigtoohill in County Cork, sees something worth persisting with. O'Brien's yard has sent out 10 winners already this season, so this is not a struggling operation — when the horses are right, they win.

Bright N Shine raced just yesterday and is clearly fit and in training. Whether the wins are behind it or whether one more is still to come, at the right trip on the right day, this horse remains worth watching.
