The real story, though, is survival and comeback. Bravethewaves has come back from two tendon injuries and a bleeding issue that kept him sidelined, yet he remains in work at nine years old and still winning. His trainer, Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero's yard at Oldcastle in Cheshire, feels confident enough to keep running him. When jockey Toby Wynne is in the saddle — which happens in roughly one in every four of his races — the results improve sharply: three wins from twelve races together, a win rate of 25%. That partnership works, and Wynne knows how to get the best from him.
His last win came at Southwell on November 25, and he has not tasted victory in his six most recent races, which suggests he may be in a quiet spell. But the yard believes there is more to come. The spring fixtures bring the softer ground this horse thrives on, and given his record and his resilience, he remains capable of another win or two before his career winds down. At his age and his level, that is quite enough.
