Bold Light

Two of those three wins have come at Kelso, from just three attempts there. Winning 2 from 3 at any track is exceptional — it means Bold Light has lost at Kelso exactly once. For whatever reason, that tight, turning Border circuit suits this horse like a glove, and trainers Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, based up in Milnathort, clearly know it. They've sent out 49 winners this season alone, so this is a yard that knows what it's doing, and placing a horse at the right venue is half the battle.

What makes Bold Light's record even more striking is where those wins have come. Both the Kelso victory in March 2025 and a win at Musselburgh on New Year's Day 2025 were Class 2 races — among the better races you'll find in Britain. At that level, Bold Light has won 2 from 5, a 40% win rate. That's not a horse scraping around the lower tiers; that's a horse that performs when the competition stiffens. Most horses win their races at lower levels and struggle when stepped up. Bold Light does the opposite.

Regular jockey Alan Doyle has been aboard for 10 of those 18 races together, winning 2 of them — 1 in every 5 rides, a 20% win rate, which is a solid partnership by any measure. The combination of a trusted jockey, a specific trainer setup, and a course that clearly brings out the best in this horse makes Bold Light the kind of animal that experienced racegoers put a circle around whenever the entries come out for Kelso.

The honest note is that Bold Light hasn't won in the last six races, and it's now been over a year since that last victory in March 2025. Recent form shows a string of placed efforts — thirds, fourths, a fifth — meaning the horse is competitive without quite getting over the line. At 9 years old, with 18 races under the belt and a race just yesterday, Bold Light is clearly still being campaigned actively. Whether another win is coming is the question, but if it happens, smart money would say it happens at Kelso.
