Bold Light

The Kelso connection is particularly striking. Bold Light has won twice from just three visits there, a record that any horse at any level would be proud of. For context, most horses win fewer than 1 in 10 races at a single track across their career. Something about Kelso clearly suits this horse — whether that's the layout, the ground conditions it tends to produce, or simply the trip. It also landed its very first career win there back in October 2024, so Kelso is where the whole story began.

Bold Light is trained by the Milnathort yard of Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, one of Scotland's most productive training partnerships. They've sent out 47 winners already this season, which is a serious output — these are people who know how to place a horse in the right race at the right time. When Alan Doyle is in the saddle, the numbers improve further: he's ridden Bold Light to 2 wins from 8 races together, a win rate of 25%, or 1 in every 4 rides. That's a meaningful partnership.

The only slight cloud is that Bold Light hasn't won in its last six races, and the most recent form figures — a third, a few blanks, and a fourth — suggest it hasn't quite recaptured the sparkle of that winter double. But it raced just yesterday and is clearly still an active, competitive horse at the top end of what it does. At nine years old, with a settled yard behind it and a track it seems to love, there's every reason to think another big day at Kelso might not be far away.
