What keeps things interesting is the consistency at the lower end of the placings. Bogha Baiste is not running down the field and disappearing — it keeps finding its way into the frame, finishing third or fourth with enough regularity to suggest the talent is there, even if the breakthrough has so far proved elusive. The gap between placing and winning can be a fine one, and this horse has been living in that frustrating middle ground.

The horse runs out of Bolton Mill in Cumbria, under trainer Lizzie Quinlan, a yard that has sent out four winners already this season. Quinlan's team clearly know how to get a horse over the line when conditions are right. The question is whether Bogha Baiste, who raced just one day ago and remains very much in active campaign, will eventually be in the right place at the right time to turn one of those near-misses into something more.
